Keynote

This year’s Keynote speaker will be Dr. Takako Aikawa of Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA.

Dr. Takako Aikawa is a Senior Lecturer in Japanese in the Global Languages Department at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA. She teaches Japanese from introductory to advanced levels and leads the Japanese Language program. Her research interests include interface issues between language education and AI technology; language pedagogy; use of Augmented/Virtual Reality for Language Learning; project-based language learning, and Japanese Linguistics. She recently presented her work as an invited speaker for the 2023 Spring EALAC (East Asian Languages and Cultures) Guest Talk for Language Programs at Columbia University (virtual) in May 2023, with the title ‘Navigating the Future of Language Education: The Role of Human Teachers and Teaching and Learning (CLTL) at Princeton, NJ in October 2023 with the title, ‘AI-augmented language pedagogy: perspective-shift is all you need’. Dr. Aikawa received her Ph.D. in Japanese linguistics from Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio.

“The Role of AI in Language Education: Call for Perspective-Shift”

Abstract:

Rapid advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) are expected to significantly transform the way we teach foreign languages.  This keynote advocates for the urgent development of AI-augmented language pedagogy that can fully harness the potential of AI in our teaching practices.  First, I emphasize the importance of acquiring prompt writing skills.  Second, I showcase the power of AI in generating teaching and learning materials.  Third, I share my use case scenarios of AI for language instruction, while addressing the benefits and limitations of using AI.  Last, I discuss the value of learning foreign languages in the era of AI.   Throughout the keynote, I underscore the significance of our shift in perspective towards integrating AI into our future language education.
